What is AI visibility — and why does it matter?

AI visibility means whether your brand appears when tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity answer questions in your product category. Traditional SEO gets you ranked in Google. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets you mentioned in AI responses — and the signals are different.

When a SaaS buyer asks an AI assistant "what's the best email marketing tool for B2B teams", the model pulls from its training data and live web index. If your brand has no schema.org markup, blocks AI crawlers in robots.txt, or simply lacks enough structured online presence, you don't appear — even with strong SEO rankings.

How the AI Visibility Score works

+4
AI Model Recognition

Two differently-phrased queries are sent to an AI model in your category. If your brand appears in either response, you earn 4 points. This tests whether the model has encountered your brand in training data or live web search.

+3
Cited Correctly

Appearing is not enough. The model must also describe your product accurately — right category, right offer, right context. A wrong description can mislead buyers. 3 points for accurate citation.

+3
Technical Crawlability

Your robots.txt is checked for AI crawler blocks (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, CCBot, and others). Your homepage is scanned for schema.org structured data. Both must pass for 3 points.

How to improve your AI visibility

  1. Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt. Explicitly permit GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and CCBot. Blocking them cuts your brand from live-web AI responses entirely.
  2. Add schema.org JSON-LD to your homepage. Use WebSite, Organization, and SoftwareApplication types. Schema markup is one of the strongest GEO signals for AI models.
  3. Publish an llms.txt file. A plain-text file at /llms.txt tells AI tools what your product does, who it serves, and what makes it different in a format optimised for model ingestion.
  4. Create citation-worthy content. Case studies, benchmarks, and specific claims are the data AI models surface in recommendations.
